Black Chickpeas Curry Recipe | No Onion, No Garlic Recipe

Let’s get started with the recipe.

INGREDIENTS:

450 Grams Black Chickpeas
2 cups Water or as Required
a pinch of Baking Soda
2 – 3 tsp Oil
1 tsp Cumin Seeds
2 tsp Ginger
(chopped)
2 cups Fresh Tomato Puree
(Puree of 6 Tomatoes)
1 Green Chilli (chopped)
1 tsp Turmeric Powder
1½ tsp Chana Masala
1 tsp Garam Masala
Salt to taste (or 2 tsp)
¼ tsp Black Salt
1 tsp Red Chilli Powder

8 to 10 Servings…

1. Soaking Black Chickpeas:

  1. Take the desired amount of Black Chickpeas and rinse them thoroughly under running water. Discard the water.
  2. Before starting the cooking process, soak the rinsed Black Chickpeas. This step ensures a tender texture and allows the legumes to absorb the rich flavors of the curry.
  3. Place the rinsed Black Chickpeas in a large bowl and cover them with enough water. Ratio of water should be at least double the volume of Black Chickpeas. Ensure the Black Chickpeas are completely submerged.
  4. Allow the chickpeas to soak overnight or for at least 8 hours. The extended soaking time helps soften the Black Chickpeas and reduces their cooking duration.
  5. If you are in a hurry, then soak the Black Chickpeas in hot water for about 4 to 5 hours. For this, heat water on high flame for 3 to 4 minutes and use it to soak Black Chickpeas.
  6. Drain the water after soaking is done.
  7. Rinse the Black Chickpeas once more under running water before using in the recipe.

2. Preparing Gravy:

  1. Take a pressure cooker and heat Oil in it on medium heat.
  2. Once Oil is hot, add Cumin Seeds. Let the Seeds splutter.
  3. Sauté chopped Ginger for 30 seconds and add freshly prepared Tomato Puree.
  4. Cook the Tomato Puree for 2 minutes.
  5. Now add chopped Green Chillies, Chana Masala, Garam Masala, Salt, Black Salt, and Red Chilli Powder. Mix everything well.
  6. Cook the Spices for a minute.
  7. Gravy mixture is ready.

3. Cooking Black Chickpea Curry:

  1. Add the soaked and rinsed Black Chickpeas to the prepared gravy along with Water required for cooking.
  2. Cook them in a pressure cooker on high flame until 10 whistles or until tender.
  3. Turn off the heat and allow the cooker to depressurise naturally.
  4. Check if the Black Chickpeas are well cooked and tender.
  5. Also, check seasoning and salt.
  6. Mash the cooked Black Chickpeas a little bit with the back of a spatula or ladle.
  7. Garnish and serve with any fried or baked breads or Rice.
