Food Styling and Photography is my meditation, passion, hobby and my reason to smile. I realised my passion for food photography during lockdown and since then I keep on learning this.

There is no hard and fast rule to learn food photography. I learnt it by doing experiments with colour compositions, lighting, props, alignment of items and some editing.

Here I’m sharing some food photography tips I learnt throughout my journey and how I made this “Apple Pie” look appealing in picture.

FOOD STYLING & PHOTOGRAPHY IDEAS :

  1. BACKGROUND: Background plays a vital role in food photography. But this is not necessary to use a professional backdrop. We can use any white, black or wooden textured board available at home. Any colour is perfect, just make sure to choose a right colour background which is not overpowering your main subject. A balance of colours is important. I kept the background of black to make a perfect balance with the brown colour of Apple Pie. I edited it a li’l bit to make it vibrant and appealing.
  2. LIGHTING: A well-lit place and a good light source is important to highlight the textures of food. I shot this Apple Pie pic in natural light but yeah I surely put some extra effort in editing too to set the colours and to not make it look dull.
  3. PERFECT ANGLE & HEIGHT: Side shot by keeping camera against the edge of pie to highlight its height and a second shot from the top to show the filling inside. Perfect sized pie looks appealing.
  4. PROPS and DECORATION: Generally, the main ingredient of the dish is kept along with it for the decoration and to show this is the ingredient used in making the dish. But I love experimenting. Instead of using the apples I used chocolates here. I found the chocolates are making this frame more appealing. But make sure everything should be arranged aesthetically.
  5. CROP: Sometimes the main subject looks good in half.

(This is not Homemade Apple Pie.)

This was last year’s fall season, I was badly craving Apple Pie (Eggless). But the problem was I am not good at baking. I don’t know how to make a good satiating perfect Apple Pie. So I ordered one from a baker.

After it was delivered to me, I opened the box and found a cute, tiny, flaky and glossy perfectly baked Apple Pie. It was so fresh. I just wanted to dig into it and enjoy its soul satisfying taste. But the food photographer inside me didn’t let me do this. So I decided to do photography first.

This Pie was of palm size but it looks bigger in frame.

It took me about 20 minutes to get the desired pic. Getting the perfect angle and adjusting the space between the pie and chocolates was li’l bit time consuming. The chocolate started melting. I wanted it to melt but only a bit at the edges.
