Black Chickpea Kebab Recipe

Kebabs, known for their succulent and seasoned goodness, have been a staple in various cultures for centuries. Originally prepared with marinated meats and grilled to perfection, Kebabs have become synonymous with communal dining and festive occasions. The aromatic blend of spices, the sizzle on the grill, and the tender juiciness make Kebabs an irresistible treat.

With the rise of plant-based lifestyles, the culinary landscape has witnessed a surge in creative and delicious vegan alternatives. Black Chickpea Kebabs, in particular, offer a tantalizing twist to the traditional Kebab experience. This vegan rendition not only caters to those who follow a plant-based diet but also introduces a burst of unique flavors that can captivate any palate.

Black Chickpeas, also known as Kala Chana, bring a robust nuttiness and a delightful earthy flavor to the dish. When transformed into Kebabs, these legumes create a hearty and satisfying dish. Whether using Boiled Black Chickpeas or incorporating the remnants of Black Chickpea Curry, the options are diverse, allowing for a personalised touch to the recipe.

In preparing these Black Chickpea Kebabs, I opted for the incorporation of leftover 1 cup “Black Chickpeas Curry,” infusing the dish with a distinct depth of flavor. However, the choice is versatile, and one may use 1 cup “Boiled Black Chickpeas’ for an equally delightful outcome.

Additionally, instead of employing a food processor to blend the cooked Chickpeas, I have gently mashed them with a potato masher to achieve a more textured consistency. This modification adds a personal touch to the preparation, allowing for a distinct and customizable outcome.

Let’s get started with the recipe.

Servings: 8 Pieces of Kebabs

1 cup Black Chickpeas (cooked)
1 Potato (boiled & peeled)
1 Onion (finely chopped)
2 Green Chillies (finely chopped)
½ tsp Cumin Powder
½ tsp Coriander Powder
¼ tsp Black Salt
½ tsp Red Chilli Powder
½ tsp Chaat Masala
Salt to Taste
Oil (for cooking)
Bread Crumbs (of 2 Bread Slices)
  1. In a mixing bowl, mash the boiled Potato using a potato masher. Potato helps in binding the mixture.
  2. Mix in finely chopped Onions, finely chopped Green Chillies, Cumin Powder, Coriander Powder, Black Salt, Red Chilli Powder, Chaat Masala, and Salt.
  3. If you opt for boiled Black Chickpeas without any included spices, feel free to adjust the quantity of additional spices to suit your taste preferences.
  4. Combine everything well to evenly distribute the flavors.
  5. Mash the cooked Black Chickpeas (either boiled Black Chickpeas or leftover Black Chickpeas Curry) to achieve a desired texture and add it to the Potato mixture.
  6. Gradually add Bread Crumbs, mixing continuously. Breadcrumbs also act as binder, helping the Kebabs hold their shape.
  7. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
  1. Take a small portion of the mixture and shape into small, round or cylindrical kebabs.
  2. Heat some Oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat for shallow frying.
  3. Once the Oil is hot, place the shaped Kebabs in the pan.
  4. Cook them for a few minutes on each side until they turn golden brown and crispy.
  5. Once done, remove the Kebabs from the pan and place them on a serving plate.
  6. Serve the Black Chickpea Kebabs hot with your favorite dipping sauce or chutney.

Vegan Black Chickpea Kebabs offer a delightful journey into the world of plant-based cuisine, showcasing how traditional dishes can be reimagined with a compassionate twist.
