Bread Pakora: A Classic Recipe

Bread Pakora is a simple yet delightful snack that holds a special place in many hearts, especially during the rainy season. The crispy exterior, tender, flavorful filling, and the burst of spices in every bite evoke memories of cozy evenings, childhood indulgences, and family gatherings. Whether enjoyed with a cup of chai or simply on its own, it’s a snack that never disappoints.

There is something magical about the combination of Bread Pakoras and a rainy day. The comforting warmth of Bread Pakoras contrasts beautifully with the chill of a rainy day. It’s a snack that not only satisfies hunger but also brings a sense of coziness, making rainy days feel like a reason to indulge.

This deep-fried, golden-brown snack has been a beloved street food in India for generations.

Bread Pakora finds its roots in the bustling streets of India, where food culture thrives on quick, flavorful snacks that can be whipped up in minutes. Traditionally, vendors dip Bread Slices in a Gram Flour (Besan) batter, and some even add a spicy mashed Potato filling to elevate the taste. Served hot, it’s a street food staple known for its simplicity yet irresistible flavor.

As delightful as it is to pick up from a local vendor, making Bread Pakoras at home brings a different kind of happiness – one that combines health, freshness, and personal satisfaction.

When we prepare Bread Pakoras at home, we are in full control of the ingredients. From choosing high-quality Bread to using fresh Oil, homemade versions allow us to steer clear of the unhealthy oils and the additives that can often be found in market versions.

The flexibility to adjust ingredients is another advantage. Want a lighter version? Use Whole Wheat Bread. Prefer a spicier version? Add extra Chilli and Spices.

Homemade Bread Pakoras can be customized to our taste preferences. Whether we like these stuffed with Potatoes, Paneer, or even Cheese, the possibilities are endless. It’s the small, personal touch that makes homemade Bread Pakoras so satisfying.

Let’s get started with Bread Pakora Recipe.

For BatterFor StuffingOther
1 cup Gram Flour
(Besan)
2 – 3 Potatoes
(Boiled & Mashed)
6 Slices of Bread
(White, Whole Wheat,
or Multigrain)
½ tsp Turmeric Powder2 tsp OilOil (for Deep Frying)
Salt to Taste1 tsp Cumin Seeds
1 tsp Red Chilli PowderSalt to Taste
½ tsp Garam Masala
(optional)
½ tsp Turmeric Powder
½ tsp Cumin Seeds1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
Water as needed ¼ tsp Black Salt
¼ tsp Black Pepper Powder
1 tsp Coriander Powder
1 tsp Chaat Masala
  1. In a mixing bowl, add the Gram Flour (Besan), Turmeric Powder, Salt, Red Chilli Powder, Cumin Seeds, and Garam Masala. Adding Garam Masala is completely optional.
  2. Gradually pour in Water, whisking continuously until a smooth batter forms. Ensure it is thick enough to coat the Bread but not too runny.
  1. If you want a stuffed Bread Pakora, prepare a filling by grating or mashing boiled Potatoes. You can skip the stuffing if you prefer a simpler version.
  2. There are two ways to prepare this filling. You can opt for any of these methods.
  3. First method is, Heat 2 tsp Oil in a pan.
  4. Add Cumin Seeds and allow them to splutter.
  5. Now add all Spices; Turmeric Powder, Salt, Red Chilli Powder, Black Salt, Black Pepper Powder, Coriander Powder, and Chaat Masala to the Oil and cook for about 1 minute to release their flavors..
  6. Add mashed Potatoes with the Spices and mix well, ensuring the Spices are evenly distributed.
  7. Optionally, add chopped Green Chillies, chopped Coriander Leaves and boiled Green Peas for extra flavor.
  8. In the second method, you can skip the step of adding Oil and Cumin Seeds. Directly mix the boiled and mashed Potatoes with Spices; Turmeric Powder, Salt, Red Chilli Powder, Black Salt, Black Pepper Powder, Coriander Powder, and Chaat Masala.
  1. Take a slice of Bread and spread a thin layer of the prepared Potato Filling (if using) on one side. I am using Whole Wheat Bread for a healthier option but you can use any variety as per your preference or availability.
  2. Place another Slice on top to form a Sandwich.
  3. Cut the Sandwich into halves or quarters, depending on your preference.
  1. Heat Oil in a deep frying pan.
  2. Dip the stuffed Bread pieces into the Gram Flour batter, ensuring they are fully coated.
  3. Gently place them in the hot Oil and fry until golden brown on both sides.
  4. Remove and drain on paper towels to remove excess Oil.

Opt for sturdy Bread that can hold up well during frying. White Bread is a classic, but Multigrain or Whole Wheat Bread offers a healthier alternative without compromising texture.

For the crispiest Bread Pakoras, make sure the Oil is hot enough before frying. If the Oil is too cold, the Pakoras will absorb excess Oil and become soggy.

Bread Pakoras pair wonderfully with a variety of Dips and Chutneys. Some popular options include:

  • Green Chutney made from Coriander and Mint.
  • Tamarind Chutney for a tangy twist.
  • Ketchup for a quick, simple option.
