Ingredients:
Basic Ingredients:
- 1 cup cooked or boiled Chickpeas (or 1 can, drained and rinsed)
- 1 small Onion, finely chopped
- 2 Green Chillies, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ground Cumin
- ½ tsp Coriander Powder
- ½ tsp Paprika or Red Chili Powder (adjust to taste)
- ¼ tsp Black Salt
- Salt and Black Pepper to taste
- ½ tsp Chaat Masala (optional)
- Juice of ½ Lemon
- 2 – 3 tsp Breadcrumbs or roasted Chickpea Flour (for binding)
- Oil for shallow frying
- 2 – 3 tsp fresh coriander or parsley, chopped
Optional Add-Ins:
- 1 small boiled Potato, mashed – adds softness and holds the patties together well
- 1 tsp Sesame Seeds – adds a nutty flavor and a pleasant crunch
How to Make Chickpea Patties:
Step 1: Mash the Chickpeas
- Start by mashing the chickpeas in a large bowl using a fork, potato masher, or even a food processor.
- Leave some texture for a better bite.

Step 2: Mix the Ingredients
- Add finely chopped onion, green chillies, cumin, paprika (or chili powder), coriander powder, black salt, chaat masala, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
- If using, add mashed potato and sesame seeds.
- Add in either breadcrumbs or roasted chickpea flour to bind the mixture. I prefer using breadcrumbs over roasted chickpea flour here.
- Mix everything thoroughly until a dough-like consistency forms.

Step 3: Shape into Patties
- Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape into round or oval patties, about ½ inch thick.
- You should get around 6 to 8 patties depending on size.
- Also, coating patties in sesame seeds adds an extra crunch. But this is completely optional.

Step 4: Cook the Patties
- Heat a little oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat.
- Place the patties in the pan and cook for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crisp.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy
- Serve warm with a cooling yogurt dip, spicy mint chutney, or your favorite sauce.
- They also taste great in pita pockets or burger buns with fresh veggies and hummus.

Tips & Variations
- Make It Gluten-Free: Use chickpea flour instead of breadcrumbs.
- Baked or Air-Fried Version: Lightly brush the patties with oil and bake at 200°C (390°F) for 20 minutes, flipping halfway. For air fryer, cook at 180°C (350°F) for 12 to 15 minutes.
- Add Greens: Finely chopped spinach or kale can be added for a nutritional boost.
- Spice It Up: A pinch of garam masala or curry powder can enhance the flavor.
Storage & Meal Prep
These patties are great for meal prep. You can:
- Refrigerate: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
- Freeze: Freeze uncooked patties on a tray. Once frozen, transfer to a ziplock bag. Cook directly from frozen when needed.
